…in support of the Sue Ryder Hospice

Over Good Friday and Easter Saturday last year seven teams took part in a relay to run 150 miles around the Bedfordshire boundary in just 24 hours.

The teams were joined by approximately 100 more people as they completed an additional five mile victory leg!

In 2020 life is very different and the country is in the grip of Coronavirus that has created unprecedented challenges for the entire population and particularly for our wonderful NHS and all those involved in healthcare.

The lovely people at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice at Moggerhanger are no exception to the challenges being faced as they experience their charity fundraising literally being cut off at the knees.

It costs £10,000 per day to provide the very special palliative care given at St John’s and that care continues throughout this crisis.

The NHS is asking Sue Ryder to plan to support more patients and yet their medical teams are already providing much needed palliative care for patients locally.

Their doctors and nurses are working day and night to provide end-of-life care now, and in the coming weeks, to more people than ever before and are a critical frontline support service in the fight against Coronavirus.

So how can we all help?

The ‘Bashing Your Garden Boundary 5k’ for Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice is how.

We can all get active and donate what we can to Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice. Now that’s what we call a double benefit! Exercise and fundraising rolled in to one.

We want everyone to join in a 5k walk or run around their gardens, driveways or even their living rooms or kitchens for Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice. That’s about three miles in old money.

You can do this on your own or with other members of your household, young or old, but please make sure that you respect social distancing at all times.

You can do the challenge in one go or over a period of time.To work out how many laps of your garden (or other space) you will need to do just take the length and width (in metres) of your garden and add them together.

You then multiply this figure by two. Divide 5,000 by that figure and see how many times you need to run around your garden to complete 5k.

All that we ask when you have completed your 5k is that you go online and donate £10 (more if you are able to) and share your experience and what inspired you to take part.

If you are unable to take up the walking or running challenge for any reason then do please still donate whatever you are able to our appeal.

On behalf of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, thank you so much. – Nick Kier
