No more orange sacks will be supplied – no extra black sacks will be collected

Bedford Borough Council’s bin crews are working hard to keep collecting household waste and recycling during these challenging times, as key workers on the frontline at this time of national crisis.

To keep the public safe and Council staff safe, the Council has had to take the difficult decision to stop the provision of orange recycling sacks from outlets, including from the Customer Service Centre.

The Council is encouraging people to compact their recycling: crush, squish, stomp on, tear up and make smaller anything you can to fit more into your recycling bin – the more space you save, the more recycling you can fit in.

If the orange-lidded bin is full before the normal collection, residents can put out extra recycling next to the orange bin in a secure container so it does not blow away – like a clear sack or cardboard box and this will be collected.

No extra black rubbish bags will be collected

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment said “Our bin crews are doing an amazing job, collecting waste and recycling across the Borough, on the frontline at this difficult time.

“Lots of people have shared their notes and pictures of thanks with the crews, and it is great to see that appreciation for the work they are doing.

“We know this change to how we collect your waste is an inconvenience and we apologise for that.

“We would ask for your understanding at this challenging time and a thought for our front line workers doing the best they can day-in-day-out.

:Council services are under huge pressure, working to deliver care for the vulnerable and elderly, and keeping vital day-to-day operations running during this international pandemic.

“We will keep collecting household waste and recycling and it is really important that we do this as safely and efficiently as possible; both for our crews and the public.”
