A support worker stole thousands of pounds from two vulnerable care home residents.
Kenechi Oji, 32, worked at Linden Court, Luton, for three years where he was entrusted to look after the men’s finances.
He took around £6,000 from one man and £2,750 from another when he got into financial difficulties, Luton Crown Court heard today/Thursday.
An internal investigation was carried out at the home when the money was found to be missing. When Oji was questioned, he made immediate admissions.
Oji, of Hatton Place, Midland Road, Luton, appeared via Skype to be sentenced for two charges of fraud by abuse of position.
Defending, Alesdair King, said Oji felt shame and disgrace for what he had done. He had no previous convictions and had acted out of character.
He said he was now working on a zero hours contract as a delivery driver for Amazon, earning £50 a day.
Judge Rebecca Herbert told him: “It was an unbelievably mean offence. There is no excuse for it whatsoever.”
She passed a 12 month jail sentence suspended for 2 years.
Oji must carry out 200 hours’ unpaid work and complete 20 rehabilitation activity days.
