An inmate who bit two prison officers at Bedford Jail has narrowly avoided a stint behind bars.
Instead of going into custody the 23-year-old was given a suspended sentence. And it means Glody Muyeki from Wolverhampton can pursue work as a male model with an agency who have told him he has a “good face structure” Glody Muyeki bit the two male officers within days of each other two years ago, sinking his teeth into their chests.
At Luton crown court on Monday, June 15, 2020, was told the officers had suffered an anxious wait for the results of blood tests following the assaults which luckily came back clear.
Muyeki appeared at the court in custody having been found guilty earlier this year of two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Judge Mark Bishop heard today how Muyeki was in the jail back in 2018 serving a a sentence for a drugs matter.
On June 27 of that year officers were trying to get Muyeki back in his cell, but he was standing in the doorway so that the cell door couldn’t be closed.
It was as a male prison officer attempted to restrain Muyeki that he attacked the officer sinking his teeth into the man’s chest. As a result Muyeki found himself in the prison’s segregation wing.
And it was there just days later that the prisoner carried out a second attack on another officer who had entered his cell and asked him to put down a chair leg he was brandishing. On this occasion Muyeki again bit the officer on his chest.
The court was told today that the defendant had previous convictions for assaults of prison officers and prison staff.
Prosecutor Daniel Kersh said the the effects of the latest assaults on the officers had been to leave them anxious and feeling vulnerable when dealing with unpredictable inmates.
David Martin-Sperry defending his client had had a troubled upbringing and had been committing crimes since his early teens.
The court was told in addition to the offers of work as a male model, Muyeki also had the opportunity to work as a “close protection” bodyguard.
Judge Bishop sentenced Muyeki to 16 months imprisonments suspended for 18 months with 80 hours of unpaid work.
The judge told Muyeki he would have to complete a thinking skills programme as well as 30 day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement..
Because of the work Muyeki will undertake to address his anger management, the judge said he hoped he would reflect on whether it was a good idea at present to work as a bodyguard. “I would ask you to think carefully about that,” he told him.
