Instead of being able to camp in a large field using on-site activities and having a team to provide all of the meals, Flitwick Scouts and their families had to have a virtual camp this year.

The camp started on Friday evening and concluded on Sunday afternoon. There was a suggested menu for the weekend which included hot dogs on the Friday evening, a BBQ on the Saturday evening and mini kebabs, egg in a pepper, cakes in a mug and campfire cones on the Sunday.

Many of the families pitched their tent(s) in the garden whilst some children made dens in their bedroom or lounge.

Families were encouraged to build their own obstacle course, use water pistols or wet sponges instead of being able to do archery, go on a treasure hunt, make a bottle rocket, making bubble solution and then trying to make a super wand to blow enormous bubbles and make a miniature raft.

There were also craft activities for each of the sections and there was a traditional camp fire on the Saturday evening (only from one of the leader’s living room over Zoom).

Throughout the weekend other activities included designing a coat of arms for their family, designing a virtual camp badge and a treasure quest hunting around their own houses and gardens.

There was also the opportunity to make a tower or bridge from recycled items and there were also some problem solving games.

One of the most popular activities for the weekend was making bottle rockets and launching them. Some went straight up in the air, whilst others disappeared over neighbours’ fences or into bushes.

Another popular activity was making a cake in a cup. Many of the activities were shared across different social media channels over the weekend.

Twins Dexter and Harvey Crane said, “We were so excited about camp that we slept in our den on Thursday because we wanted to sleep in it for three nights. It was a great weekend with so many fun things to do.”

Parent Susie Nikulasdottir said, “An absolutely brilliant, action packed weekend which has given us a real boost. Heartfelt thanks to all the leaders and organisers for all your ideas, organisation, co-ordination, hard work and unfailing commitment and enthusiasm! I reckon it will be some time before we get Izzy back out of the tent again. Thanks again.”
