In what seems like a means to bury bad news, Bedford Borough Council released notification of weeks of disruption on the only main road into Bedford from the North, on Friday early evening [October 16, works starts Monday October 19].

Cadent Gas are to carry out essential works to divert gas services that will see a lane closure from the A6 Paula Radcliffe Way roundabout to Clapham Road.

This will see one lane closed travelling southeast into Bedford past Sainsbury’s from 10am. This lane will be reopened by the middle of December, at the latest.

This is part of wider works to make improvements to these roundabouts and help ease congestion as part of the A6 Northern Gateway. As part of the wider Transporting Bedford project, road and junction improvements have been carried out across the town which will improve congestion and road safety.

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Highways said “There is expected to be significant disruption in the area while these Cadent Gas diversion works are taking place. Please avoid the area if possible.

“These works were not expected to take place until later in the year, but Cadent Gas have agreed to start them earlier than previously expected. This will allow us to complete the overall scheme more quickly.

“We know these works are intrusive and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. They are part of a project to make vital improvements to our road network for the long term future.”

Transporting Bedford is an £18million project to tackle congestion hotspots in Bedford, funded by South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) who have injected £15.5M of funding with the balance coming from Bedford Borough Council, this represents the largest ever investment in Bedford’s roads.
