Kind-hearted colleagues at an insurance firm who had their charity golf day cancelled by coronavirus decided to chip-in regardless to help their local hospice – driving donations to an incredible £10,000.

Bedford independent brokers M&DH Insurance Services hoped to hold their 15th annual golf day for Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice earlier this year, but plans to tee-off were halted by lockdown restrictions.

However, they still wished to support local patients and families in need and selflessly donated £10,000 to the Moggerhanger hospice – taking their total fundraising over the years to over £165,000.

The support comes at a crucial time for Sue Ryder, the national healthcare charity which runs Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice.

Last month, the charity was forced to launch its second urgent fundraising campaign of 2020 in response to the impact the Coronavirus pandemic has had on its funding.

Richard Hames, Managing Director of M&DH, said: “For the past 14 years, we have organised an annual charity golf day in support of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice and the expert care it gives to families. Our golf days are usually a real celebration in aid of what is a very deserving local charity; last year we enjoyed a brilliant day of golf followed by a wonderful evening gala.

“As we sadly weren’t able to hold our 15th golf day this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic, we still wanted to support the team at Sue Ryder who are always there for people during difficult times. The work they do has never been so important and we hope our donation will help them to continue delivering their high quality care and support.”

Hayley Webb, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, said: “An enormous thank you to all the team at M&DH for your incredible on-going support and latest contribution of £10,000. Your support makes a real difference and we are really grateful for everything you have done over the past 15 years.

“As a charity, we are heavily reliant on the support of our local community to provide our care. Our nurses, doctors and staff have carried on caring throughout the pandemic, and we are proud to be there for local people with life-limiting conditions and their families.”
