With a national lockdown announced by the Government, and everyone being urged to stay at home to control the virus, protect the NHS and save lives, Lurke Street, River Street and Allhallows multi-storey car parks will be closed overnight tonight (Thursday January 7) until further notice.
COVID-19 infections and hospital admissions are rising dramatically across the country, and estimates show that one in 50 people in private households had the virus last week.
Following the announcement of this lockdown, and to enable Council staff to focus on essential services, the Council’s multi-storey car parks will be closed until further notice, apart from Queen Street.
To provide parking for critical workers who need it and those on essential journeys, Queen Street multi-storey car park will remain open 24/7.
Parking will also be available at surface car parks including Riverside Car Park, St Mary’s, Duckmill Lane, Ashburnham Road, Prebend Street, Greyfriars and Melbourne Street, and on-street parking will be available as always.
Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Transport said: “With clear legal instructions to stay at home to control the virus, protect the NHS and save lives, we have made the decision to close three of our multi-storey car parks in the town centre overnight on Thursday January 7.
“There will still be parking available at Queen Street multi-storey and surface car parks for critical workers who commute, need to park in town for work or anyone getting their essential shopping.”
