The start of the Covid vaccination programme has been delayed in the Ampthill, Flitwick and Barton areas in Bedfordshire.

Patients had been told vaccinations were to start at the Rufus Centre in Flitwick on Tuesday January 12.

But a ‘logistical issue’ has been blamed for the set back.

The centre will now open on Monday January 18.

Some patients will be invited to attend the mass vaccination centre in Stevenage, one of just seven centres in the country.

Houghton Close surgery in Ampthill said on its website: “We were hoping to start vaccinations from Tuesday January 12 at the Rufus Centre, Steppingley Road, Flitwick MK45 1AH but unfortunately this has been delayed due to a logistical issue and will not start until week commencing January 18.

“Please note that this vaccination programme is far more involved than the usual annual flu clinics and there is a great deal of work being done behind the scenes to make this work. We are looking forward to getting this started as soon as possible.”

The practice said it will telephone patients who are over 80 and mobile to book their appointment.

NHS for Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes said: “If you have received a letter today in Bedford or Central Bedfordshire, inviting you to attend a vaccination clinic in Stevenage, please do not be concerned.

“There are vaccination centres opening across the country to give people choice, depending on where they live.

“Vaccination centres are available through groups of GP surgeries in Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire as well as in Milton Keynes and Luton. Your GP will invite you to attend a more local clinic should this be more convenient for you.”
