Since the first national lockdown, Sandy Town Council has worked to reach out to our residents and offer opportunities for enrichment and community engagement to help bridge the gulf of social distancing.

Last year, the Council invited residents to express their creativity in a Summer Scarecrow Festival, searched for Sandy & Beeston’s Best Kept Gardens, marked the Sandy Green Wheel’s 2nd anniversary with a letter hunt around the walking route, and celebrated the town’s festive spirit with a Christmas Decoration Competition.

Over 50 households took part in these events and we received wonderful feedback and engagement from the community.

We also took the opportunity to promote our town centre businesses, who have needed the support and patronage of our community more than ever over the last year.

With each event, the council awarded prize vouchers for a variety of independent restaurants, a butcher, a florist, and a clothing boutique – chosen by the winners.

During the year, the Council gave over £500 in prize vouchers for local businesses; doing what we could to help our wonderful independent shops, restaurants and services to survive in this difficult time.

Sandy Town Council is now looking to the year ahead and has already opened its first event on the calendar for 2021, our World Book Day Kids’ Craft Competition, in partnership with Sandy Library.

Children across Sandy and Beeston are invited to send in a photograph of their drawings, paintings, and any manner of crafty creations, inspired by their favourite book. This could be a character, a place, or anything at all from a story they love.

There are just a few days left to enter, as the competition is open until Thursday 4th March.

All entries will be shared on the Council’s Facebook page and we’ll be awarding National Book Tokens to our judges’ favourite entries in three age categories: under 7 years, 7-12 years and 13-18 years.

To be in with a chance of winning, all that kids (or their parents) need to do is send a photo of their book-inspired work, with the child’s name and age to admin@sandytowncouncil.gov.uk.

We can’t wait to see all our local children’s crafty creations and to share them in celebration of World Book Day, on Thursday 4th March 2021.
