Murdered canal worker was a former Hertfordshire police officer

The canal worker who was murdered on a canal tow path in Aylesbury was a former police officer, it was revealed on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Clive Porter, 63, from Tring in Herts, died on Monday lunchtime on the Grand Union Canal at Broughton in Aylesbury.

He was working for the Canal and River Trust, having previously served with Hertfordshire police.

In a statement issued by his family it said: “Clive Porter was a much loved husband, dad and grandad. He was a quiet calm and caring person, who served the community as a police officer for over 30 years before joining the Canal and River Trust.  He was loved and respected by all who met him.

“Clive had a passion for working outdoors and meeting people.  He believed in caring for people and the environment through the principle of policing by the people for the people.


“The family would like to thank the hard working investigation team at Thames Valley Police and also the family liaisons DC James Armitage and DC Lynda Stearman for their hard work and support.

“The family have also been overwhelmed by all the support and messages of condolence they have received from friends, family and the wider community.”

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses. Members of the public had called the emergency services at around twenty past midday on Monday. Mr Porter was found with serious injuries and died at the scene.

A 34-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested early on Tuesday on suspicion of murder. He remains under arrest and in the custody of officers while receiving hospital treatment.

A 41-year-old woman from Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. She has been released on police bail until May 24.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Shearwood said: “Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this murder investigation.

“I would like to specifically appeal to anyone that was using the canal towpath near to Broughton crossing, between 12pm and 12.30pm on Monday, April 26.

“We believe that anyone who was using the towpath between these times could be vital witnesses to this incident, or could have information to assist with our enquiries.

“If you were in this area between 12pm and 12.30pm and think you might have information that could help, please contact us urgently.

“Please contact Thames Valley Police on 101, or by visiting our website, and quote reference 845 (26/4) when making any reports.

Richard Parry, the Chief Executive of the Canal and River Trust, said: “One of our team on the Grand Union Canal died on the towpath in Aylesbury in an incident which is the subject of a police murder investigation.

“We are deeply distressed and are sharing the police’s appeal urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant, to come forward and assist the investigation.
