Walkers and pedestrians heading into Bedford from Elstow are encountering a massive caterpillar web.

The ghostly-looking web has covered trees and bushes a 30 metre stretch of the A5134.

It has been created by Ermine Moth caterpillars as a form of protection.

The Butterfly Conservation charity said on its website: “Don’t worry about Ermine Webs.

“At this time of year we often receive reports of ghostly silken webbing covering sections of hedgerows and, on occasions, individual trees.

“Although it can look rather sinister, don’t be alarmed.

“The most likely culprit is a harmless caterpillar.”

The webs slowly disappear over the summer.
