A driver who rammed a police car as he tried to get out of a hotel car park near London Luton Airport has been jailed for 10 months for dangerous driving.
Waqar Nawaz, 27, had parked the Ford Focus in the car park of the Holiday Inn Express in Percival Way on the night of September 4, 2020, only for it to come to the attention of police officers who decided to keep a watch on it.
Luton Crown Court was told devices were placed in front of the car and behind it that would deflate the vehicle’s tyres if it drove over them.
On Friday, September 24, 2021, Recorder Bal Dhaliwal hearing the case, was told that Nawaz eventually emerged from the hotel with a woman and they then got in the car with Nawaz in the driving seat.
An officer approached and told him to remain where he was. Instead he slammed the car into reverse and then sped forward hitting a police car.
The court heard he then drove towards a police officer who feared he was about to be struck by the Ford Focus.
Luckily he wasn’t injured and Nawaz then drove at speed out of the car park and onto the road where he hit speeds of more than 70 mph where the limit was 30.
Nawaz made off from the police, but was eventually arrested.
In court Nawaz of Sherwood Road, Luton pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.
Recorder Dhaliwal was told that in February of this year he was sentenced to to 54 months for driving and drugs offences.
She sentenced him to 10 months imprisonment to run consecutively to his current jail term.
In addition he was banned from driving for 42 months.
