On April 19, 2020 at 5.45pm Bedfordshire Police Force Contact Centre received a report of a man being assaulted after confronting an offender damaging his property in Luton.
The offender, now known to be Lybia Assoba, 33, of Corncastle Road, Luton, left before police arrival but when the officers were with the victim waiting for an ambulance he returned and continued his attack, throwing bricks through the window.
When he saw the officers Assoba gave chase but was apprehended shortly after in neighbouring street.
When searched by officers he was found to be in the possession of a loaded gun and a plastic container with 11 wraps of Class A drugs.
Soon after the incident Assoba pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis, ammunition and a firearm and faced trial in May 2021 where he was also found guilty by a jury of two counts of possession of Class A drugs and criminal damage.
He was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, to 63 months for firearm offences and a further 18 months for drug offences, totalling six years and nine months total imprisonment.
Detective Sergeant Michael Wallis, from the Luton Crime Investigation Department, said: “Although Assoba accepted responsibility for the firearms offences it was the jury that found him guilty of possession of a significant amount of Class A drugs. As a force we are dedicated to eradicating drug criminality which plights our communities and continue to bring offenders to justice.
“We work with numerous charities and partner agencies which help people lead a life away from such criminality and activity associated with gangs and organised crime.”
