The high street between St Peters and Mill Street has been ripped up and re-laid this week because it was a trip hazard due to an error in laying.

It has been confirmed by Bedford Borough Council that the contractors are paying to correct their mistake.

One member of the Conservative group believes that it was left too long before taking remedial action, during which time it is known that many people tripped on it.

Conservative Deputy Group Leader Councillor Roger Rigby said: “The Borough blames the contractor for the small difference in levels between the roadway and the footpath, it has however, caused many people to take falls in the high street over the last few months finally forcing the Mayor to order this vital rectification.

“The last thing Bedford needed was a mismanaged contract like this with the number of visitors to the town centre nearly halving over the last two years.

“This is a complete shambles which should have been rectified within days not months.”
