That’s right, a £30 shopping bill would come down to £29.94p.
Some shoppers were left scratching their heads and wondering why they should make the effort to take up the offer for such a paltry amount.
But now supermarket giants Sainsbury’s have apologised for the “confusion” and said the coupons sent out in the post to shoppers should not have read on the front of each “Save 6p when you spend £30 or more instore”
It was a printing error, they say and the offer on the coupons should have read: “Save 6p per litre of fuel.”
The coupons went out just before Christmas and arrived through one letterbox in Stevenage addressed to the female occupant.
There were three coupons that could be used at certain times at Sainsbury’s during January and February and saved the shopper £4 50p on a spend of £30 or more when used with a Nectar card
But two coupons attached to the perforated strip offered a similar instore deals for later this month, but said the saving would be just 6p.
It’s only by reading the tiniest of writing on the rear of the coupon in the middle of the terms and conditions, that it becomes apparent the coupon is in fact for fuel.
“I couldn’t believe it was a serious offer when I saw the 6p coupon. Let’s face it, it would be hardly worth the effort go to a store, park up, walk up down the aisles, spend £30 plus and all to save 6 pence,” said a family member who didn’t want to be named.
But after Sainsbury’s were contacted, a hasty check was carried out and a spokesperson for the company said: “There was a printing error on a recent coupon which should have read: “Save 6p per litre of fuel.
“Customers can still redeem the coupon and we’re sorry for any confusion.”
