A driver who hit and killed a teenage pedestrian in Luton was in court on Thursday, May 26, 2022, convicted of causing death by careless driving.

Rizwan Rizwan was driving a grey Vauxhall Corsa that struck 18-year-old Paul Gabriel on Sundon Park Road at around twenty to six on Friday, May 15, 2020.

The teenager, who was originally from Hertford, was pronounced dead at the scene, Luton Crown Court heard. He had suffered a traumatic head injury.

Rizwan, aged 35, of Culverhouse Road, Luton, was cleared of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs (cannabis), but was convicted of the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving.

Another pedestrian suffered minor injuries, but a pet dog being walked by the pair was also killed. Another dog, American Bulldog Taurus, ran from the scene and was later found dead.

At the time of his death Paul’s family said: “Paul was fondly known as DJ at home and was a gentle giant. He aspired to become a dentist and was working hard to go to university.

“He left home on the fateful day after lockdown was lifted, having spent most of the time at home throughout that period. Unfortunately he was taken away from us prematurely on Friday, May 15, 2021.

“We will miss the warmth and joy he brought to the family and his cheeky smile. He was a much loved son, great brother and an amazing friend to his friends.  He served passionately in his local church and his love for the work of God took him to Finland as a missionary. He was loved by all he met.

“He will forever be missed by all who knew him and as a family we are utterly heartbroken. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Judge Charles Gratwicke bailed Rizwan for sentence on June 24.
