Is this really the welcome the Mayor wishes to extend to visitors?

Dear Sir,

I am a resident and a local businessman who has traded in Bedford town centre for many years.

I recently drew attention to the dirty streets and uncleaned empty shop doorways.

As a result some of my customers, local shopkeepers and even strangers have talked to me about the shocking state of Bedford’s Bus Station.

For people coming to Bedford by bus to shop or to visit the town as tourists the Bus Station will be their first impression of our town centre.

What a vision for them to behold on arrival.

A dirty filthy building inside.

Netting has been draped around the interior to keep the pigeons away creating a complete eyesore.

A stained floor with whatever the stains are along with it looking like it hasn’t been swept for weeks.

These people who talk to me also tell me the building is also frequented by beggars, drug users and drinkers adding to passengers discomfort.

It is NOT good enough to give the Bus Station and occasional clean.

People are using it every day and like any shop premises it needs a THOROUGH clean EVERY day also along with continuous security.

I am proud of Bedord where I and generations of my family have served the town but all I can say is I despair of what the town has become under 14 years of the current Mayor.

Mr Mayor if you cannot get the basics right such as simple cleanliness you should stand to one side and let someone else do it that will.

Robert Rigby, Bedford.
