A man who had been sold a blacklisted mobile phone in Bedford was left with a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull and permanent scars after he went back to complain.
The victim, from Luton, was chased down the street and attacked with a brick, broom and punches.
On Thursday, February 23, 2023, four Romanians appeared for sentence at Luton Crown Court for their part in the attack, which happened in Houghton Road, Bedford.
Dan Lazar, 36, of Hurst Grove, Bedford was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Ioan Nusica, 39, of Houghton Road, Bedford,
Raducu Visan, 30, of Ombersley Road, Bedford and
Anna-Maria Spiridon, 39, of South Brook Court, London Road, Bedford were convicted of causing grievous bodily harm.
All four were found guilty to violent disorder and Visan was also convicted of dangerous driving.
Prosecutor Alisdair Smith said the victim was in surgery for six hours and needed 52 staples in a head wound.
It took two separate appointments to remove them. He may need further surgery on his eye socket injury. In a victim personal statement the man said he had been left with scars and a metal plate inside his head.
His sinuses have been affected and his teeth pushed back. “I am very conscious about my appearance and am terrified of people seeing my head,” he said.
He had been off work for five months. Lazar had picked up a brick which threw at the victim’s van and head.
Nusica had picked up an iron bar, but discarded it when he was restrained by others in the street. He attacked the victim while he was on the ground.
Visan had driven a vehicle to block in the victim’s van and threw a punch that put him to the ground.
Spiridon had chased the victim along Houghton Road, returned to her property and armed herself with a broom. Lazar was sentenced to eight years. Nusica was jailed for three years.
Visan was sentenced to three years and was banned from driving for 31 and a half months. Spiridon was jailed for 26 months.
