If you are road user in Bedford Borough you might find this hard to believe but Comparethemarket’s insurance team has found Bedford Borough’s road conditions are some of the best in the country.

After analysing government data of the road conditions in each local authority in England they have published the study which can be viewed here: https://www.comparethemarket.com/car-insurance/content/superior-roads/

Obviously the council is keen to let you all know about this good news – 86% of the roads have been found to be good condition.

However the Tories on the council are perhaps a shade more sceptical with Councillor Sarah-Jayne Gallagher saying: “Has April Fool’s day come early?”

“The Borough’s own internal Road Condition stats reveal that almost 60% of the Borough’s roads are local roads for local traffic which have become considerably worse in the last 14 years.

“Back in 2009 only 4% of the Borough’s roads were in the red, meaning they required intervention.

“This has now reached 24% under the current Mayor.

“Residents, especially in rural parts of the Borough, are being left with horrific driving conditions as roads are left to disintegrate – the A428 through Turvey is in a very poor condition, the A600 between Cotton End and Haynes and Willington Road in Cople are in a complete state of disrepair.

“The reality for Bedford drivers is very different from the skewed statistics and spin from the Mayor.”
