Bedfordshire Police’s Assistant Chief Constable has hailed “the best job in the world” as he leaves his hometown force for the final time.

ACC Sharn Basra calls time on a distinguished 30-year career in policing on Monday, June 12, 2023, the vast majority of which has been spent in Bedfordshire.

Born and bred in the county, ACC Basra has held a huge number of roles across the force, from frontline policing and public protection through to major crime investigations.

He was recognised for his service at the force’s annual awards last week.

Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst said: “Sharn has been an incredibly loyal, talented and dedicated public servant to communities across Bedfordshire.

“He brings extraordinary knowledge and calmness to our force. Colleagues know that Sharn has been there and done it here in Bedfordshire, and this experience is incredibly reassuring.

“It is also a measure of him that during Covid, as well as leading our operational response during a hugely difficult time in policing, Sharn could be found volunteering at medical centres and the local food bank.

“Sharn should be incredibly proud of everything he has achieved in policing and I am sure everyone here will wish him well for what comes next.”

ACC Basra’s position will be filled in the short term by T/ACC John Murphy, ahead of a permanent replacement being recruited over the coming months.

ACC Basra said: “I see day in day out the absolutely excellent police work that saves lives and protects the public here in Bedfordshire.

“I would not change a single day of my career. Policing is the best job in the world and a big part of that is because of the people I have had the pleasure of working with.

“It has given me more skills than I could possibly mention, allowed me to serve my community and really feel like I have made a positive difference.

“I feel very fortunate to have worked in such a brilliant, exciting role with such an amazing amount of variety which has challenged me every single day.”
