A 73-year-old man from Bedford had a harrowing encounter with an electric scooter, resulting in a head injury and bruising. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 9, 2023, in Rushden High Street when the pensioner, who wishes to remain anonymous, stumbled over a carelessly abandoned ‘Voi’ electric scooter.

The senior citizen’s fall could have had far graver consequences were it not for some unexpected saviours in the form of BBQ charcoal bags placed outside the T. E. Brown butcher’s shop. Instead of crashing into the glass window, the man’s fall was cushioned by these bags, preventing a more severe head injury.

Reflecting on the incident, he expressed his gratitude to the three individuals who rushed to his aid and helped him regain his footing. In the aftermath of this ordeal, the gentleman raised concerns about the proliferation of electric scooters in public spaces, emphasizing their potential dangers, particularly for visually impaired individuals.

“These scooters are a menace; they must be hell for the blind and partially sighted,” he remarked, urging people to exercise greater caution when using and leaving electric scooters unattended. His plea highlights the importance of responsible scooter usage and the need for enhanced awareness to ensure the safety of pedestrians in shared urban environments.
