Radio LaB, the University of Bedfordshire’s on-campus community radio station, is celebrating after being nominated for two Community Radio Awards (CRAs).
The station is looking to add to its impressive trophy cabinet with two nominations in the categories of ‘Sports Show of the Year’ and ‘Live Event or Outside Broadcast of the Year’. Both awards recognise the station’s coverage of Varsity 2023 which saw Bedfordshire triumph over rivals University of Northampton.
The nominations recognise Radio LaB’s mammoth effort, culminating in a 9-hour programme covering every sporting event at the Varsity competition. The broadcast took months of planning and involved over 20 students from both Bedfordshire and Northampton universities.
Speaking about the nominations, Terry Lee – Senior Tutor in Radio & Audio and coordinator of the station – said: “I’m extremely proud of the radio team, and they are proud of themselves too. The Varsity event was a huge highlight for our students last year – a big day with coverage of multiple sporting events across the Bedford campus. Best of all, the team all had great fun making it happen. It feels fitting for the team to be acknowledged twice for this programme – both the pre-production planning & the sports journalism on the day were brilliantly executed.”
James Boyle, final year Radio & Audio student and current student manager at RadioLaB, added: “We spent a lot of time preparing for the day. During the event, all the planning paid off and it all worked smoothly; everyone knew what they had to do to, the quality, production & the broadcast technology. I would love to do sports radio after I graduate so the experience was valuable to me. Being shortlisted for the Community Radio Awards is an amazing feeling and I am proud of the team for their efforts.”
Radio LaB has previously enjoyed much success at the CRAs, with the 2022 ceremony seeing two recent alumni – Jose Goncalves and Toby Crabb – taking home the Silver and Gold awards respectively.
The 2023 Community Radio Awards will be held at a ceremony in Newcastle on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
