Bedford Borough Council is pleased to announce that the Paula Radcliffe Way works are entering their final phase. The Council remains on schedule to finish the project for the revised completion date of Friday, December 15, 2023.
Originally these worked were expected to end by November, however following a more detailed inspection of the safety barriers it was decided that they would need full replacements, adding time to the project.
These essential works are designed to create a safer environment for both motorists and pedestrians, aligning with the Council’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of infrastructure and improving safety standards along Paula Radcliffe Way.
While the Council and contractors are working hard to complete the project on time, it has become apparent that some motorists are causing congestion issues at the Sainsbury’s junction.
Feedback from Sainsbury’s indicates that customers are experiencing difficulties leaving the site due to drivers not following the highway code and creating queues across the junction.
Jim Weir, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Highways, and Transport at Bedford Borough Council, commented on the progress, stating: “We understand the challenges that roadworks can pose to the community, and we appreciate the ongoing patience of residents and commuters.
“In light of recent concerns raised by Sainsbury’s, we kindly urge motorists to adhere to the highway code and refrain from blocking the junction. This small but crucial gesture will greatly assist customers leaving the Sainsbury’s site.”
Council officers are reviewing the operation of the traffic signals and there will be extra signage in place asking people not to block the junction to help clear traffic from the Sainsburys site more quickly.
The Council acknowledges the inconvenience caused during this period and asks people to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time for their journeys while the final phase of these essential safety works is underway.
The completion of this project will not only enhance safety but contribute to the overall improvement of our community infrastructure.
