Dear editor,
My name is Jan, and this December I’ll be singing as part of a special staff choir at Sue Ryder Celebrate a Life Bedfordshire, a winter event which gives people the opportunity to get together to remember and celebrate their loved ones.
I have worked in the kitchen and as part of the incredible housekeeping team at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger for the last 15 years. I’m so lucky to do the job I do. It’s an honour to be there for patients and their families playing my part in making those final moments together special, catering for their individual needs.
My colleagues and I are like family and our goal is to care for people and make them feel like they’re at home – and that doesn’t stop once a patient dies. That’s why I decided to join the choir to bring joy to people at events like Celebrate a Life, and other remembrance services throughout the year so we give everyone the opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones.
I love singing and Birgitte, who runs our choir, is such an inspiration. Celebrate a Life is a very special occasion to be part of, where we have the honour of performing such meaningful songs. Music helps bring people together. It’s nice to do something extra special for the families, to spend time with them, and to and show them warmth and love at a difficult time.
