A couple from Broom have switched on their ever-popular Christmas light display for the fifth year to raise money for their local Sue Ryder hospice.

The festive fundraiser on 93 High Street in Broom, which has once again been created by locals Anne and Paul Nicholas, will be open each evening 5pm – 7.30pm from now until  December 24, in support of Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger.

Visitors to the light spectacle will be met by falling snow as they enter the garden gate into a magical Winter Wonderland featuring over half a million LED lights.

Plus, new for this year will be a gingerbread house, Santa’s workshop spanning the garden decking, and a large gothic twinkling colourful arch to wow the crowds.

Youngsters and their families will also be invited to spot the three brand new inflatable gonks, enjoy some Christmas colouring, and take part in a festive garden trail.

There will also be a raffle with prizes including a free-range turkey from Franklins Farm shop in Sandy, a festive flower arrangement from Skipps Florist in Biggleswade, a gift from Willow Tree Distilling and more.

Anne said: “It’s become a passion of ours now, something we look forward to each year, and we couldn’t think of a better cause to support. So many people we speak to have been touch by care Sue Ryder provides in some way.

“A big thank you to Charles Whitbread and The High Sherrif of Bedfordshire, Russell Beard, who officially opened our Christmas lights display at a private event last month.

“Our thanks also go out to the Bedfordshire businesses who have generously donated items for our charity our raffle and to the community for continuing to get behind us and our lunatic lights.”

Last year, the pair raised more than £10,500, taking their overall total over the years to £26,400 to help Sue Ryder to reach more people when they really need it.

Nick Burr, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice: “We are so grateful to Anne and Paul for their continued support raising vital funds which help us be there for people when it matters.

The team is always blown away with what they achieve year on year, and it just wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit to their Broom Christmas lights. It’s thanks to supporters like the Nicholas’ that we can ensure that no one is left to grieve or die alone.”
