Bedford Borough Council is excited to announce a new addition to Russell Park, set to captivate and entertain residents and visitors alike – a 12-hole mini golf course. This project aims to replace the existing grass course, providing a year-round accessible facility that not only meets the demand for family-friendly activities but also combines learning about local history with entertainment. It’s expected to significantly increase park usage throughout the year.
Jim Weir, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Highways, and Transport at Bedford Borough Council, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming project: “We are thrilled to introduce this exciting venture to our community. The mini golf course is not just a recreational space, it’s an opportunity for families to come together, have fun, and learn about the rich history and landmarks that define Bedford Borough. This initiative aligns with our commitment to providing inclusive, accessible, and educational opportunities for all.”
This exciting project brings significant advantages to residents and visitors alike. The mini golf course will not only provide a new recreational activity for all ages, but it will also be accessible year-round, unlike the current putting course. This means more opportunities for families and friends to enjoy Russell Park throughout the year, regardless of the weather.”
The project is set to commence in the coming weeks, with an expected duration of 8-12 weeks, aiming for completion by the Easter break. Urban Crazy, a renowned mini-golf course designer, will be overseeing the development, ensuring that the 12 holes are not only engaging but also uniquely tailored to celebrate the historical and iconic landmarks around Bedford.
The Council has partnered with The Kiosk in Russell Park, combining efforts to manage and operate this exciting new venture. The themed course will provide a bespoke design, showcasing the distinct character of Bedford Borough, making it a standout attraction for residents and tourists alike.
Thomas Healey, co-owner of The Kiosk Russell Park, said, “We’re excited to see the project coming together, after a while in the planning. The current basic grass course gets good use in the summer but requires heavy grounds maintenance. In recent years, with summers getting warmer, the grass becomes scorched and the play experience is compromised.
“The new 12-hole experience will be more compact, designed for an engaging round, and available all year. The redevelopment will bring the costs of associated upkeep down and draw lots of new users too. We plan to offer a discounted family voucher to incorporate a round of mini golf and a ride on the Longholme dragon boats, both unique local activities that we are proud to operate and manage. The project has been assessed for its viability and will pay for itself well within the life of the course.”
Russell Park, a beloved green space in Bedford, will see minimal disruption during the construction phase. The Council is committed to ensuring that the development has little impact on other areas of the park, emphasising the positive contribution the mini golf course will make to the community all year round.
“We understand the importance of preserving our green spaces, and we want to assure the community that every effort will be made to minimise any inconvenience during the construction period. This project is a testament to our dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities while preserving the natural beauty of Russell Park,” stated James Lynch, Team Leader for Open Spaces, Infrastructure and Community Engagement.
Bedford Borough Council looks forward to unveiling this exciting new development, providing a family-friendly attraction that combines leisure, education, and local pride.
