Bedford Borough Libraries are delighted to announce Love Libraries Month, a month-long celebration of books, reading, and libraries throughout February. Everyone is invited to take part in events for all age groups, as well as seize the opportunity to become a library member if they have not already done so – membership is free for everyone.
Councillor Sarah Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, expressed enthusiasm for the exciting programme of events, stating, “We’re thrilled to offer these vibrant events and activities for all ages during Love Libraries Month. Libraries are the heart of our communities, fostering a love of reading and providing access to knowledge and learning for everyone. Whether it’s experiencing the joy of reading, free access to computers and Wi-Fi, or one of the fantastic events, we have something for all our residents.”
“The school holiday events always prove popular and it’s wonderful to see so many exciting free craft activities available for families in our Bedford Borough Libraries.”
The month will feature author events for fiction lovers and family-friendly events for those with young children. Special Storytime sessions at Bedford Central and Kempston libraries, for under-fives, promise an engaging experience with stories, rhymes, themed activities, library hunts, and free sticker books. The beloved Bookstart Bear will also be making an appearance at some of these sessions.
During the half term week there will be free crafts for families in all the Bedford Borough Libraries. These include decorating a llama finger puppet and making your very own crazy caterpillar.
Older children, aged four to seven, can take part in an interactive session with author Simon James Green, who will be reading his picture book, Llama Glamarama at 11.30am in Bedford Central Library on Wednesday 21 February. This is a free event and no need to book in advance. Later the same day those aged twelve and over, will also have their share of entertainment, with Simon James Green bringing the hilarious awkwardness of adolescence to Kempston Library at 2.30pm. Tickets are £2.
For adults, fiction fans can meet Julia Jarman at Bromham Library at 1.30pm on Thursday 8 February, as she discusses her new novel, ‘The Widows’ Club.’ Meanwhile, Sue Moorcroft will share insights into her life as an author at Putnoe Library on Monday 12 February at 11am. Tickets for both these events are just £2.
History enthusiasts can embark on a fascinating journey through Bedford’s past with Bob Ricketts at Bedford Central Library on Friday 9 February at 11.15am. The talk will be exploring the town’s transformation between 1950 and 1970, tickets are £2 and expected to sell quickly.
Other than the Storytime sessions, half-term crafts, and Llama Glamarama, all the events will need to be booked in advance and places are limited. Further details and how to book for the events can be found at https://www.bedford.gov.uk/libraries/your-local-library-opening-times-facilities-and-activities, please use the code HIGGINS30 to avoid booking fees. Tickets can also be booked at the Box Office on 01234 718044, or by speaking to library staff for further information and booking assistance.
