The Duchess of Edinburgh [Sophie] flew into Bedford on Tuesday, April 23, to visit the Kings Arms Project in Harpur Street.
The Duchess was shown around the former Guild House and was introduced to members of staff who run the Project’s Language Service.
Courses take place at the Project teaching English as a second language to those who need it, helping them integrate into society. The service is commissioned by Bedford Borough Council.
While there the Duchess also learnt about the night shelter provision in the town. Bedford Borough Council support two night shelters in the town, one of which they are wholly responsible run by SMART and the other is run in conjunction with the Kings Arms Project. Both shelters have provided important support for rough sleepers in the town.
Sophie is pictured here receiving bouquets from two royal watchers who travelled from Northampton to catch a glimpse of her.
Sophie recognised the couple who have met her on a number of occasions, she spent a few minutes chatting with them before being whisked away to Bedford Modern School where a helicopter flew her to Caddington for her next engagement.
