Bedford Hospital’s Primrose Unit has expressed its appreciation to Judy Mansfield who was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the hospital in February 2024 and has been having treatment at the MacMillan Primrose Unit.
However, before her treatment, Judy raised £3000 by undertaking a solo pilgrim walk along the Northumbrian Coastal Path from Jarrow to Lindisfarne.
Judy decided to use the time before the treatment began to get fit in mind body and spirit by with the solo Pilgrim Walk of 55 miles over five days along ‘The Way of the Sea’, one of the Northern Saints Trails.

“I had done one of these walks the previous autumn”, said Judy, “and I enjoyed it, so I decided to do another one to get ready for treatment.
“It was a shock to be diagnosed with cancer, but I was so impressed by the speed with which scans and meetings were arranged and a treatment plan devised. The care and compassion of all the staff and volunteers at the hospital meant I felt in safe hands and I could put my trust in them.
“So I decided to see if I could raise a couple of hundred pounds for the Primrose Unit who do such good work. I put the word out on social media about what I was doing and I was amazed at how much money poured in from friends not only locally, but all over the world.
“The sum of £3000 was mind blowing – my phone kept pinging with donations as I trekked through Northumbria!”
Judy has decided to share the £3000 between two causes close to her heart – the Primrose Unit (via Bedford Hospital Charity and Friends), and Lemlem School in Ethiopia where she teaches as a volunteer, visiting the school two to three times a year for the past six years.
