A NEW OWNER has taken over the former Debenhams building in Bedford at 42-54 High Street.
Bedford Borough Council has just finalised the purchase of the iconic art-deco Debenhams building with plans for its redevelopment.
The well-known structure has remained empty since May of 2021, when the occupying Debenhams company declared bankruptcy. After years of languishing and inaction under the previous administration, action has finally been taken.
Although the building’s interior has suffered as a result of several years of non use, and a lack of heating during the winter months which includes a small amount of water damage, the site is poised to start a program of renovation and redevelopment.
Initial ideas envision a mixed use space, that would include independent and boutique stores, and service shops on the ground floor, with residential accommodations on the top floors.
There are rumors of the creation of a family focussed area managed by new leisure operator Better/GLL (who recently replaced the failed Fusion provider) giving parents a drop-off point for their children so they can shop and enjoy the town centre.
The acquisition falls in line with the Council’s Local Plan 2040, which involves the renovation of the entire block, known as Mayes Yard, which includes the former Beales department store, the Harpur Suite, Bedford Central Library and the Bedford Corn Exchange.
The whole team at the council and the current cabinet have begun receiving praise for taking action on this amazing success story.
The redevelopment is set to transform the heart of Bedford town centre and show why Bedford is truly keeping its reputation as a trend-setter on reversing the decline of the High Street and the promotion of the indie shop.
