A section of the concrete canopy overhanging the walkway around Allhallows has collapsed, with large chunks of concrete and signage falling on a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, an older man, was knocked unconscious and is in a serious condition.
He was being treated at the scene by paramedics but has now been moved.
The fire brigade are in attendance and are securing the area.
The estate agents William H Brown, whom the signage belong to, were the first responders and called the ambulance for the man.
There have been reports of recent works being undertaken at the nearby former bank premises on the corner of the same larger building structure, but it is presently unclear if these are connected.
This is a breaking story and more information will be available as it develops.
