Drinkers at The Sun pub in Leighton Buzzard say they are prepared to try the world’s first zero carb lager.

Bud New is on sale in the US at four per cent alcohol but just 80 calories, which would have a dramatic reduction on drinkers’ beer bellies.

Garry Maher, 45, a heavy plant operator, said: “If it stops the extra tyre it has got to be a good thing. As long as it’s got alcohol in it it should be OK. I will definitely give it a go.”

Mark Hiles, 31,  a metal worker said: “I don’t care about the calories, but my wife counts them. So let’s get it over here and taste it.

One Bud drinker, who refused to give his name, said: “I won’t be changing. I am sticking with the Bud as it is.”

Joseph McConnell, 85, said: “I am not worried about a beer belly at my age, but I will give it a go.”

Pete Soper, 44, an engineer, said: “I am happy to test it. Let’s have some free samples.”

Landlady Jackie Sargerson, 62, said: “I will stock it here and give it a bash.

“I think it might be beneficial to some of the women  who come in and worry about their calories.

“I am not going to say if having a no calorie drink would benefit any of my customers – that is too personal.”
