Apprentices who are part of The Bedford College Group have been taking top prizes in a range of industry competitions.

In two separate events, Group apprentices took first, second and third prizes and hope to be moving on to national finals.

The Bedford College Group is a major provider of apprenticeships across Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Bricklaying winner – first place

Bloor Homes apprentice Owen Gallagher has won first prize in a regional Guild of Bricklayers competition held in June. He is now off to compete in the next stage of the competition on July 4th.

Owen is a Year One bricklaying apprentice.

Said Vice Principal Dave Wilkins: “We’re all delighted with this result and my thanks to all the bricklaying lecturers for their support.”

Skill Build – 3 of the best

Bench Carpentry and Joinery apprentices came second and third in their category at the Skill Build competition held in June.

Stuart Sherrard came 2nd and Ryan Pearson 3rd.

Said lecturer Kenny Hill: “Firstly a big thank you to their employers for allowing them time off from work, we know how busy everyone is. Three students Stuart, Ryan and Euan Lee had to lug a tool chest on public transport across London to Lewisham College.

“They then had to work from a briefing and drawings of a curved door/window. All three completed the complicated task, which other competitors failed to do. We hope that the final marks are enough to take them through to the national finals.

“Well done everyone.”
