Executive Director of The Bedford College Group (TBCG)  went back to being an “apprentice” to show by example how the learning system can be embraced by people at all levels of organisations.

Debbie Houghton, who is Director of Apprenticeships at TBCG, did a Senior Leadership and Management Degree Apprenticeship – a Level 7 Master’s Degree resulting in an MBA, to give her a hands-on understanding of how apprenticeships actually work from the perspective of the “trainee”.

Promoting apprenticeships as a great route into careers, and then on to promotional upgrades, is part of Debbie’s role at the college group. Earlier this year she joined a Government level meeting at No 10 to talk to those at the highest level of educational funding about shaping apprenticeships for the future.

“Apprenticeships are being re-valued by young people and parents who increasingly see them as a route into robust and long-term employment in skilled and technical roles.

“At The Bedford College Group we are the region’s Number One provider of apprenticeships in Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire across huge range of jobs – many of then in new areas of technology-dominated industries, but also social roles such as caring and hair and beauty.”

Debbie’s qualification title is ‘Master of Business Administration (Leadership Practice)’ for which Debbie got a merit overall.

“The great bit is that for the degree ‘apprenticeship’ part of this programme, which is the EPA (End Point Assessment) I got awarded a distinction, so I was pretty happy,” said Debbie.
