Bedford Borough Council has announced its participation in Recycle Week 2024, taking place from Monday 14 to Sunday 20 October. This national campaign celebrates the dedication of residents in Bedford Borough and encourages everyone to join the effort in saving four unsuspecting packaging heroes from ending up in the wrong bin.
“Recycle Week is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and highlight the positive impact we can all have on our environment,” says Councillor Jim Weir, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Bedford Borough Council. “We’re excited to join this national campaign and encourage everyone in Bedford Borough to become recycling heroes themselves – by ensuring their packaging finds a new life through proper recycling.”
This year, Recycle Week focuses on highlighting the plight of four commonly misidentified recyclable items – Dee Dee the deodorant can, Rey the plastic trigger spray bottle, Yogi the yoghurt pot, and Hube the humble toilet roll tube. Often mistakenly tossed in the rubbish bin, these “heroes” deserve a second chance through proper recycling.
While we’re a nation dedicated to recycling (nine out of ten people do it regularly!), research from Recycle Now reveals a concerning trend: nearly eight out of ten of us (79%) admit to throwing at least one recyclable item in the general waste bin.
To combat this issue, Recycle Now has created a team of relatable characters to represent the most frequently missed recyclables. The campaign slogan “Rescue Me – Recycle” perfectly encapsulates the mission – to keep these everyday heroes out of landfill and ensure they live a circular life.
How you can help:
- Check your recycling: Look out for Dee Dee, Rey, Yogi, and Hube in your household waste.
- Recycle right: All four items belong in your orange-lidded recycling bin.
- Spread the word: Use the hashtags #RescueMeRecycle and #RecycleWeek on social media to share your support for responsible recycling.
- Be informed: Visit www.bedford.gov.uk/mybins and use the Recycle Now tool to check if an item is recyclable.
- Follow the campaign: Stay updated on ways to get involved and make a difference this Recycle Week by following Recycle Now on Twitter (@recycle_now) and Instagram (@recyclenow_uk).
Recycle Week is a time to make a real difference in our community and for the environment. By working together, we can ensure that everyday items get a second chance and that Bedford Borough continues to champion responsible recycling.
