Despite face to face Scouting not currently permitted and with various Scout events cancelled, members of Flitwick Scouts managed to celebrate VE Day.
All of the members of the four Beaver Colonies (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) and the three Cub Packs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10 ½ ) were given the opportunity to earn a badge. They were set five challenges which they had to complete by VE Day.
The challenges were: make a parachute for a toy; play a game of battleships; make a red, white and blue decoration to put in their window on VE Day; write their name in Morse Code; and either watch the film or read the book Stuart Little as it was first published in 1945.
Several of the children took the opportunity to share some of the challenges they had completed when they met via Zoom.
The most popular activity seemed to be making the parachute, and sending launching a toy from their bedroom window.
Some of the children went one step further and found out about semaphore. The decorations were very varied ranging from bunting to paperchains to pom-poms.
Beaver Scout Josh Boyle was so absorbed by the challenge that he chalked the Union Flag on his driveway. He said, “VE day makes me feel happy for all the soldiers that fought in the war and that we had Victory in Europe.”
Adult volunteer Jane Lee said, “We may not be able to meet “face to face” but the children are being provided with details of badges they can work towards.
These have included Artist, Book Reader, Chef, Collector, Gardener, Model Maker, Naturalist and Photographer.
Last weekend the Cubs should have been camping and we know that some of the children took the opportunity to camp in their gardens for the weekend instead.”
