A petition has been started to require fast food outlets to print car registration numbers on their packaging in a bid to help stop littering.
McDonalds, KFC and Burger King have all re-opened their sites as the coronavirus lockdown measures ease. There has been a noticeable increase in instances of litter being dumped nearby and in country roads as the meals are scoffed on the way home!
Plaid Cymru the Welsh political party has launched the petition.
It states: “Fast Food outlets reopened in Wales on Monday 2 June.
“Since then we have seen an increase in the litter dumped in our communities after visits to the drive-through.
“People should use the bins provided or take their litter home.
“Throwing it out of the car is not acceptable.
“We are calling on the Government to make it compulsory for fast food outlets with drive through facilities to print car number plates on all packaging so that litter can be traced back.”
Commenting on the initiative, NFU Deputy President Stuart Roberts said: “Fly-tipping and littering in all shapes and sizes continues to spiral out of control, with the latest figures showing there were over one million incidents of fly-tipping in the past year.
“Not only is it illegal and a significant blight on our countryside to dump rubbish, it can be dangerous to wildlife and livestock.
“We need the Government to address major rural crime issues, such as fly-tipping, which can have huge impacts on farms and our countryside.
“It should not be the responsibility of farmers to clean up rubbish recklessly abandoned by others.”
