A couple bought a Doberman to protect their home after their Ring doorbell recorded a burglar breaking in.
Miles Connors, 36, was caught on camera arriving at property in Lilac Grove, Luton and then leaving with a bag, containing jewellery and cash.
Prosecutor Robin Miric told Luton Crown Court on Wednesday April 21, 2021, that the break-in happened at 7pm in the evening on February 26, last year.
Connors kicked in the lower panel of the back door and took a large amount of jewellery, including rings, charms, a bracelet, gold necklace and coins.
In a victim personal statement the woman said they had spent £2,000 on extra security at their home and had bought a Doberman to make them feel more at ease.
She said sentimental items that cannot be recovered had been stolen.
The pictures from the doorbell was circulated amongst officers and one identified Connors as someone he had dealt with before.
On October 8, Bedfordshire police headed to Romford to arrest Connors. He drove off in a grey Audi.
Mr Miric said Connors was travelling at between 80 and 90mph at times and was involved in dangerous overtaking.
The police gave up the chase because it was considered to dangerous. They arrested Connors when he became stuck in traffic.
Connors, of no fixed address, appeared for sentencing having pleaded guilty to burglary and dangerous driving. He also admitted having no licence and no insurance. He had two previous convictions for burgling houses.
Defending, Roger Daniells-Smith said that at the time of the burglary Connors’ young wife had died and he felt “completely bereft.” He said he could no cope and had turned to drugs.
He said Connors was ashamed of the burglary and wanted to apologise to the victims.
Judge Gary Lucie jailed him for a total of three years and banned him from driving for three years saying he must take an extended retest before regaining his licence.
The judge told him: “You entered a property by kicking in a door panel and stole a lot of personal items. It has had a long term effect on the victims.” Ends
