Just two months after receiving a suspended sentence, Uzair Sabir was in trouble with the law when he was found in possession of a “fearsome” looking knife with a 10 inch blade.

As a result of the breach, the 23-year-old from Chandos Road in Luton has been jailed for 11 months with part of his suspended sentence being activated.

On Thursday, May 6, Sabir appeared at Luton Crown Court to be sentenced for an offence of having a bladed article which was sharply pointed in a public place.

It was in February of this year that police in Luton were called out to deal with a fight taking place in the town involving a number of men.

As they dealt with the incident, officers became aware that Sabir, who was in Dunstable Road, had a knife on him. When questioned by the police, he claimed he had found it in a park and picked it up.

Prosecutor Stefan Weidmann said the defendant had, in December 2020, been given an eight month prison sentence suspended for 18 months for an offence of affray.

Being found with the knife therefore meant he was in breach of the terms of the suspended sentence order that he should not commit any offences.

Passing sentence, Judge Rebecca Herbert told Sabir she had seen the knife and went on: “It’s a particularly frightening and dangerous looking implement with a 10 inch blade – it’s fearsome looking.”

She said at 23 he was lacking maturity and she said that the probation service had come to the view that he posed a risk to the public.

For possessing the knife, he was given a five month jail sentence and Judge Herbert told him that, for the breach of the suspended sentence, she would activate six months of it, making a total of 11 months.

Sabir was told that, when he is released, he will be on supervision for 12 months.
