A national lockdown is now in place with COVID-19 infections and hospital admissions rising dramatically across the country, and estimates showing that one in 50 people in private households had the virus last week.

As a result, everyone is being asked to stay at home as much as possible. People are allowed to leave their home for exercise with their household/support bubble, or one other person, but this should be limited to once per day and should not require you to travel outside your local area.

Parks and play areas will be remaining open throughout this period of lockdown so that individuals and households can get their daily exercise and enjoy nature in our beautiful local parks.

Bedford Borough Council (BBC) is reminding everyone to keep their distance from others when taking their exercise, wash and sanitise their hands regularly – particularly before/after touching any play equipment, and not to gather in groups.

In line with government guidance, outdoor gyms and multi-use game areas are closed. Where possible this will be done with a physical closure and where this cannot be done, signage is in place to make it clear that these facilities are closed.

The Council is also reminding people not to stop in places where social distancing may be difficult, such as on narrow bridges over the river. Please make sure that the bridge and the exit are clear before crossing.

Cllr Charles Royden, Portfolio Holder for Environment, BBC, said: “We know how much people value their local park, especially when they may not have a garden or space to get some fresh air and exercise off any excess energy.

“We are encouraging people to enjoy our parks during their daily permitted exercise in a safe and responsible way. Don’t gather in groups, keep your distance from others, and wash/sanitise your hands regularly.

“With local infections and hospital admissions rising we need everyone to play their part to protect the NHS and save lives.”
